about
About this track: “Save Myself” isn’t just the title of Justine Giles’ new single. The song represents a mission statement for the Calgary, Alberta-based artist who is poised to make an indelible mark within the singer/songwriter world. Drawing inspiration from artists including Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette and Kacey Musgraves, Justine has developed her own distinctive sound rooted in her personal journey. “Save Myself” is the first taste of a new collection of songs chronicling the latest phase of that journey, during which she learned to take control of her destiny.
The seed for “Save Myself” – co-written with Matt Blais and produced by Mark Troyer – was planted prior to the pandemic as she coped with the end of a close personal and professional relationship. However, she couldn’t get anything down on paper until making a bold solo move from Sudbury, Ontario to Calgary where she reconstituted her life and found the strength to make music again.
“I feel that there’s been extreme growth over the past few years,” Justine says. “I’ve had good and bad experiences in the industry just like everyone else, but above all I’ve learned how to trust myself and find my own voice.”
lyrics
Lyrics: I’ve always been your best-kept secret
You’ve always been my worst nightmare
Vivid stares from empty eyes
I gave, but you took back
I was never enough when I was trying to help
So you left me in the cold to fend for myself
All our days were destined for destruction
For you my touch meant nothing
You still let me in your bed
Time again, I’d place my faith in you
Compassion turned out cruel
Some things I won’t accept
All I could try to do was save you from the dead
Now I know, I’ve gotta save myself instead
You’re always good at escaping blame
Playing people like they’re games
Amazing how you didn’t care
I gave you everything I had
No one even knew that I was there even when I held you
Just left me in the dark to try to find the truth
All our days were destined for destruction
For you my touch meant nothing
You still let me in your bed
Time again, I’d place my faith in you
Compassion turned out cruel
But I won’t be your wreck
All I could try to do was save you from the dead
Now I know, I’ve gotta save myself instead
I look back and wonder how be both survived
In tryin’ to save you, a part of me died
All our days were destined for destruction
For you my touch meant nothing
You still let me in your bed
Time again, I’d place my faith in you
Compassion turned out cruel
Some things are meant to end
All I could try to do was save you from the dead
Now I know, I’ve gotta save myself instead
